The Price of Bread Is Now Sky High Use This Instead

a plate of a cheese garlic naan

Why is bread getting so expensive?? Here is a delicious alternative that literally goes with everything! This delicious alternative is none other than naan. Once you taste naan, it becomes some thing that you need in your life forever. I’ve tried several naan recipes. And I’m going to share my take on this one which has become my go to. Here is the original version. I just have a few modifications. And honestly, I cannot say enough about this.

I put it in the freezer and when we’re ready to eat, I put in on broil in the oven. And it tastes just like the day I made it. Except sometimes crispier if I’m not watching closely. A minute on each side is about all the time it needs to get soft and fluffy again.

Naan is so much cheaper to make. It’s yummy, it’s healthy and extremely versatility.

Materials and ingredients

All you will need is… a medium sized bowl, a rolling pin and a cast iron skillet and of course, measuring apparatus.

  • 1/4 cup Warm water
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon Yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm Heavy cream (with 1/4 cup of regular tap water. I use this instead of milk)
  • 1 cup Plain greek yogurt
  • 4 cups Flour (and some for dusting your countertop as you roll out the naan)`
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons Baking powder (I have still got great results leaving out the baking soda)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • Butter for frying

Combine the Sugar, warm water and yeast in a bowl and wait until it gets foamy. Add all the remaining ingredients into the same bowl. Mix until everything comes together. It will be a little sticky. Cover and set aside for one hour.

Method

After the dough as risen, divide it into 8 sections and roll out to about a six inch diameter. Heat up your skillet on Medium to medium low. I find that lower heat helps my butter not to burn.

Fry each disc of dough in a pat of butter, one at a time. Once you see the dough begin to form bubbles in the skillet, flip it over and fry the other side for a minute.

Set it on a rack to cool. Add another pat of butter into your skillet and repeat. This naan is soft, fluffy and had and amazing texture.

Endless ways to enjoy

Naan is literally great for sandwiches including peanut butter and jelly, tuna, grilled cheese… if you can name it, you can use naan to make it! We’re getting creative this weekend and trying it out for Gyros instead of using pita bread. Update, I think this naan made the tastiest Gyro’s I have ever had!

I would love to know your experience with this. Please comment below!
